“It was with shock and horror that I learned of the massacre of children by terrorists at a school in Peshawar, Pakistan this morning. According to reports 132 children and nine staff members were murdered in an attack for which it appears the sole purpose was to terrorize and murder innocent children in order to horrify Pakistan and the world.
Sadly, an event like this is not without precedent. Similar attacks on children were carried out in 2011 on the island of Utøya in Norway where 69 children were massacred by a deranged fanatic and in 2004 in Beslan, Russia where 385 hostages were massacred by terrorists; including 186 children.
I join with other Canadians, including over 100,000 Pakistani-Canadians, in expressing my deep condolences to the family and friends of the victims of this horrific act.
I will be joining Fort McMurray’s Pakistani-Canadian community, along with many other members of the local community, for a memorial service to be held at the Golden Years Society at 4pm today.
The Liberal Party of Canada will continue to stand with Pakistan in confronting terrorism and in promoting democracy and the rule of law. As Pakistan’s founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, stated in 1947, ‘There is no power on earth that can undo Pakistan.’”
