Liberal Statement on the Death of Canadian Freestyle Skier Sarah Burke

Posted on January 19, 2012

MONTREAL- Liberal Youth and Amateur Sport critic Justin Trudeau made the following statement today regarding the passing of Sarah Burke:

“It is a sad day for Canadians as we reflect on the tragic passing of one of our true pioneers in sport.

Ms. Burke was a world champion. She made Canada proud, not just as she waved from the top of the podium, but with her fierce and unrelenting advocacy for her sport. She single-handedly brought freestyle skiing to new audiences and successfully campaigned for the equal treatment of women in the sport. Ms. Burke was capable of amazing things, both on and off the slopes.

In 2014 in Sochi, Russia, when women’s ski halfpipe will be an Olympic event for the first time, we will remember how hard Ms. Burke fought to make it happen and how hard she would have fought to be the first on that podium.

On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I extend my deepest condolences to Sarah’s family during their time of grief.”
